Simple translations are budgeted based on the number of words in the document to be translated. The price may vary depending on the language and the deadline. Sworn translations are budgeted according to the rules of the Board of Trade of Rio Grande do Sul, which establishes a price list according to the type and number of characters in the document to be translated.

It is the translation with legal validity before public bodies and institutions, for a document that was issued in a foreign language. It is done by translators accredited by the Board of Trade for each state. It is sometimes called a sworn translation and others times it is called a public translation. In general terms, the public translation is a document that has the same legal value as the original in a foreign language, as if it were a copy certified by a notary public. The difference is that, when a copy is authenticated by a notary public, the notary only has to check the original and certify the copy. The public translator and commercial interpreter, in turn, in addition to inspecting the source document, must translate it into the vernacular or into a foreign language. Translation, however, is only one aspect of the job of a public translator and commercial interpreter. In addition to translating the document’s linguistic elements, they must also mention the presence of stamps, signatures, seals, coats of arms, folds, describe the type of paper, in short, offer the greatest amount of evidence of fidelity between the two documents. Although this may appear to be overzealous, these procedures serve as a guarantee, both for the translator and for the client, that the document will have the expected legal validity.

Consular legalization is the authentication of a document by the Brazilian consulate in the document's country of origin. This procedure is adopted by countries that have not signed the Hague Convention. Without consular legalization, the authenticity of the original document may be questioned, and therefore the validity of the translation. In other words, before bringing the document to Brazil, it is essential to have it authenticated by the Brazilian consulate in that country and vice versa. Check with the entity to which you intend to present the document, and if consular legalization is required, you must arrange for it before requesting a certified translation. A translator approved by an exam held by the State Board of Trade and certified to perform the so-called sworn translations, which are recognized by public bodies and institutions. This professional is formally called “public translator and commercial interpreter.” The profession of public translator and commercial interpreter (TPIC) is regulated in Brazil by Presidential Decree 13.609, on October 21, 1943, and by Normative Instruction 84 of the DNRC (National Department of the Registry of Commerce), on February 29, 2000. In addition to these two legal documents, each Brazilian state has the autonomy to define, through their respective state Board of Trade, the practical aspects of the TPIC profession. In addition to written translation, the public translator, as the official name of their activity already describes, is also an interpreter, so their legal validity also applies to the oral translation of testimonies in civil and criminal cases, wills, marriages, etc.

To be recognized, this type of translation must be printed on paper that contains the sworn translator’s personal data, registration number, and signature.
